Safety and trust

9 questions to ask before any clinic abroad touches your teeth

Choosing a dentist in another country means trusting a stranger, often in a language that is not your own, with your health, your money, and your face. The good news is that you can separate a clinic you can trust from one that will leave you worse off with nine questions, and none of them is about price. Ask them of every clinic you are considering, and insist on the answers in writing before you book a flight. A clinic that answers all nine clearly is showing you exactly how it will treat you in the chair. A clinic that dodges even one is telling you something too. Here are the nine, and why each one matters.

The nine questions, and what a good answer sounds like

1. Will the surgeon I speak to now be the person who does my surgery?

At many clinics the person who charms you online is not the person holding the instruments. You want one dentist who plans your case and performs every step personally.

2. Will I get the exact, final, total price in writing before I book a flight?

"From" prices are the oldest trap in dental tourism. You want the full number, locked, before you spend a euro on a flight, with nothing added after you arrive.

3. How long until my permanent teeth are in, and why?

This one quietly separates the clinics you can trust from the rest. The true answer is 6 to 12 months: implants have to fuse to your bone before they can carry permanent teeth, and no clinic anywhere can skip it. A clinic that tells you this, and sends you home with fixed temporary teeth to wear in the meantime, is being straight with you. A clinic that promises permanent teeth in one trip is either loading final teeth onto unhealed bone, or counting on you not to ask.

4. Who gives my anesthesia or sedation, and what are their credentials?

Sedation is safe in the right hands and dangerous in the wrong ones. You want a qualified anesthesiologist present, not someone improvising.

5. Which brand of implants and ceramics do you use, and can I look them up?

Cheap, unbranded implants exist, and if one fails in five years no dentist at home may be able to service it. You want a specific, internationally recognized brand you can search for.

6. Can I see real before and after photos of your patients, and reviews I can verify?

Stock photos and testimonials with no last name are worthless. You want the actual work of the actual clinic, and reviews on a platform the clinic does not control, like Google.

7. How many patients do you treat at once, and how many international cases a month?

This is the biggest hidden difference in dental tourism. A clinic running 50 to 100 patients a week has to move fast and split your case across several people. The fewer patients per dentist, the more careful the work.

8. Will I have direct access to the dentist after I fly home?

Most problems are small and easily solved, but only if you can reach the person who did the work. Being passed to a call center from another country is a nightmare.

9. Will you tell me straight if my case is one you should not do?

A clinic that takes every case is a clinic that will take yours whether it is right or not. Sometimes the most trustworthy answer a dentist can give is "no."

Notice what is missing: not one of these nine questions is about price. The cheapest clinic and the right clinic are almost never the same one. The right clinic answers all nine without flinching, in writing, before you ever get on a plane.

Dr Ana wrote these out as a free one-page guide, including exactly how she answers each of the nine for Aponia, so you can hold her to the same standard as everyone else. You can read her full credentials on the about page, and if you want to see whether Serbia is a safe choice in the first place, start with is dental work in Serbia safe.

Frequently asked questions

Why should none of the questions be about price?

Price tells you what a clinic charges, not whether the work is safe or lasting. The nine questions test the things that actually determine your result. Once a clinic passes them, then compare prices.

What if a clinic will not answer in writing?

Treat that as an answer. Anything important, the price, the timeline, the guarantee, should be something a clinic is willing to put in writing before you commit to a flight.

Should I really ask these of Aponia too?

Yes. The guide exists precisely so you can hold every clinic, including this one, to the same standard. A clinic confident in its answers wants you to ask.

How do I get the full checklist?

It is free by email. You get the one-page guide with all nine questions and Dr Ana's own answers, so you can compare any clinic against it.
